You are craving that delicious green smoothie; you can almost taste it. You know what would go great with it? A bendy glass smoothie straw from Strawesome. Seriously- everything tastes better with a straw.
However, most straws are made from plastic that does not biodegrade very well and remains in landfills indefinitely. And many plastics leach out toxins in the foods we eat and drink, like BPA and phthalates. Nobody wants to drink a BPA Green smoothie, I bet.
I was recently approached and offered to try Strawesome’s glass drinking straws and write my thoughts on the product. Simple enough to most people. But for me, I was torn. I was going to receive the straws right when we were beginning Project Green Foot. First rule of Project Green Foot. Follow all the rules or J.P will win! So, what does a green smoothie drinking gal like myself do?
Of course, I thought the straws would be a great addition to my “on the go” goodie bag I leave in my car and I was right. I decided to accept the straw challenge and see what all the glass straw rave was about. Strawesome was generous enough to send me 3 different straws: one clear 6″ kids decorative straw, one clear 8″ skinny decorative straw, and one clear 10″ smoothie bent decorative straw.
I was a little apprehensive at first because the straws are made of glass and glass does break. However, I was reassured of their safety.
According to the Strawesome website, the straws are made of borosilicate glass (non-toxic) tubing which is the strongest commercially available glass. This is the same glass that Pyrex® is made from. You can feel confident when drinking hot or cold liquids that no toxins are leaching into your beverage.
Why switch to reusable glass straws from Strawesome?

- The straws are one way to limit your exposure to toxins from plastics because they are toxin-free! No BPAs, phthalates, etc.
- They are dishwasher safe.
- Handmade in the USA-actually in Michigan.
- 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you don’t love your straw, send it back for a full refund.
- Lifetime guarantee against breakage. If you break it will be replaced.
- They are lots of fun! Have you ever had a green juice or berry smoothie with a glass straw? If not, you are missing out!
I really do enjoy my glass straws. I personally like the bent smoothie one. It is perfect for my green smoothie in the morning. The opening of the straw is just big enough to make sipping in all the green goodness easy. I even let my 12 month old daughter try the straws under my supervision, of course. I would not recommend children be left unattended with a glass straws.
The skinny straw was great to share my homemade juice with her. The diameter (7mm or .28”) of the drinking hole was just the right size for her little mouth. I tried the 10″ smoothie straw and the 6″ kids straw, but the opening (12mm or .47”) of the straws was too wide. She would take in too much water and cough.
The only problem I encountered with one of the straws was that part of the decorative glass that loops around the straw chipped. I am thinking while I was cleaning my straw it knocked a few times with a glass and chipped.
Fortunately, Strawesome has a life time guarantee on their straws. Therefore, on the rare occasion that your straw chips or breaks like mine, all you have to do is fill out a form and they will send you a new straw.
However, we do not want to be replacing straws left, right and center because that would defeat the purpose of having a reusable straw. The chip in my straw is not the end of the world. I am still going to continue to use it, but I will be extra careful.
Strawesome functions on the honor system and does not require you to send back the broken straw. They prefer that resources (mail and packaging) be saved and simply asks that you recycle your straw. They do not usually take back the straws because either they can’t be fixed or fixed safely (they could hide fractures causing more breakage).
The only thing I would advise after purchasing your straw, is to take extra precaution when handling the decorative ones, to assure the glass does not chip. I think the next time I need a straw or buy one as a gift, I will purchase the non-decorative straw. In my opinion, these straws are less likely to chip or break because they are free of decorations.
One straw at a time you can make a small, but effective impact on the environment.
