How To Be Healthy In A Sustainable Way

Wellness

15 Sep

When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, the first things that might come to mind are going to the gym or eating a lot of salads – and although those things can definitely help, what if we could also make choices that were good for the planet as well as our bodies? The fact is that we can be healthy and eco-friendly at the same time, and the two things can easily go hand in hand once you’ve thought about it. With that in mind, here are some tips on how to be healthy in a sustainable way.

Eat Local Foods

One of the easiest ways to stay healthy and reduce your carbon footprint is to eat local foods – and to try to eat whole foods when you can. If you get your food or the ingredients to make your own dishes from local farms and markets, for example, you’re not only doing your body a healthy favour, but you’re also cutting down on how far the food has to be transported, which cuts down on dangerous emissions.

Plus, when you buy locally (ideally directly from the supplier if you can), you’re supporting local businesses too, and that’s going to make the area you live in more prosperous and generally better, and that’s always got to be a good thing.

Don’t Drive

Eating well is a great start, but you’ll also need to be active if you want to be healthy, and that can be difficult when you don’t have a lot of time due to work and other responsibilities. But what if you could make time? One way to do it would be to stop driving everywhere and try different means of transport, and you might find you get a lot more exercise done than you realized you would.

By leaving the car at home and walking, cycling, or taking public transport (walking to and from the train station or bus stop can still be exercise), you’re getting more active every day, and you’re reducing your carbon footprint at the same time. Depending on where you live and where you’re going, you might even gain time (you won’t be stuck in traffic) and save money (running a car is expensive).

Go Out In Nature

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as physical health, and one of the best ways to make sure your mental health is well-balanced is to spend as much time in nature as possible. That could be a walk in the park, a hike in the woods, or just sitting in your backyard reading through useful health blogs like Sanitorium, for example. The fact is that whatever it is you do, connecting with nature in some way can reduce stress, boost your mood, and just generally make you feel so much better.

That’s why it’s a good idea to make it a habit to get outside for a few minutes each day; even a quick walk around the block can do wonders for your mind. Plus, try to unplug from any screens for at least a little while each day – it really could be the best thing to do for your mental health, but it’s potentially good for your physical health, too.
