There is never a bad time in life to start taking care of your health. Whether you’re studying for your high school exams or enjoying your retirement, your decision to improve your physical and mental wellbeing is admirable.

Although there are countless forms of exercise, going to the gym is one of the convenient ways to build up a sweat and get your body moving. For a small monthly fee, you have access to an endless array of gym equipment, workout classes, and expert health advice.

But if you’ve never set foot in a gym before, it can all seem a little overwhelming. You might be imagining a nightmare world of muscly athletes judging any newcomers for their lack of strength and aptitude. But you couldn’t be more wrong. Most gym-goers are just like yourself, and are more interested in their own workout than worrying about what anyone is doing. And once you start visiting regularly you will realize this.

But to make your transition into gym life as smooth and productive as possible, here are some helpful tips you should follow.

Pick the right gym

You have so much choice when it comes to choosing a gym, especially if you live in a big town or city. And there are many factors to consider, such as cost, location, opening times, gym equipment, and the availability of workout classes. It all depends where your priorities lie. You might want to go for the cheapest option, or the one that is most convenient to visit on the way to work. Maybe you’re happy to spend a bit more money for a wide selection of bootcamps and group workout sessions. Most gyms offer a free trial, so test out a few options and find the right one for you.

Get the gear

One of the great things about going to the gym is that all the workout equipment is provided for you. But there are still a few items you’ll need to make the most of your session. Some workout clothes and a water bottle are essential, and these can be purchased fairly cheaply from any good sports store. You’ll also want to bring a towel and a gym bag to carry your belongings.

Ask for help

Gym machines can be confusing to a newcomer, but don’t be intimidated. Once you know how they work, you’ll find they are actually very simple to use. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, either from a member of staff or another gym member. You’ll be surprised how willing people are to offer assistance. Sooner or later, you’ll be in the position to help a beginner too.

Set goals

What is it you want to achieve from your time at the gym? Maybe you just want to improve your overall health, or perhaps you have more specific goals like building muscle or training for a marathon. Setting targets for yourself will give you focus and motivation, allow you to make the most out of each and every workout. Just remember to start slow and build up your efforts over time.
