Bringing home a newborn is one of the best things in life, one of the most important moments where you bring your bundle of joy back into your home to start to bring up and have your family complete. It is also one of the most worrying times, as now, all of a sudden, you are in charge of someone, all their needs, and once, keeping them healthy and alive, and it can be quite daunting to go through. Especially for first-time parents, it can be very nerve-racking when you get home with your newborn or some things that you need to do not only for them, but for yourself to make the experience a lot more pleasant and less stressful. You need to look after yourself too.
Take Time For Yourself
When a newborn comes home, it can trigger a lot of people to pop around to see the baby, have a cuddle and check how you’re doing. Well, that is a lovely thing to do, but when there are a lot of people coming, and maybe people are not that close, it can become very overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to get a newborn into some routine and dealing with the huge changes of come about your life since bringing the baby home. One of the things you could do is tell people you’re not having visitors for the first two weeks. This way no one will feel left out or that you are holding something against them, but it gives you time to bond with the baby and start implementing the changes into your life that need to happen, like affected sleep, sleepless nights if the baby is up a lot as well as all the new routines that you need to do. If you just take a couple of weeks to get into the routine of things that need to be done and get used to the changes, you can start taking visitors in and feel much better about inviting people into your home and holding and visiting your newborn.
Get Some Rest
One of the things you will want to take advantage of is your partner's off. You want to try to get as much rest as possible. It is a lot of work giving birth, whether that’s naturally or through C-section. Despite people being sent home even the same day after giving birth, you’ve gone through a major thing. Your body is pushed out a whole human, and you’ve gone through the most pain you’ve ever felt in your life. So, let the baby have bonding time with dad, get some naps in and take some nice relaxing baths. Having naps during the day will be very beneficial when babies are newborns. They do wake up a lot in the night. They can eat every couple of hours, so even if you sleep in between the feeds, it will be very broken sleep, but if you’re not used to it, it can affect your body. It's always a great way to relax after giving birth, and it helps to call your overactive muscles. Pushing the baby out is a great way for you to destress. However, make sure you don’t use any fancy bath products when you’ve just given birth, as they can be harmful and make you sore.
Eat Right And Batch Cook In The Future
Before you give birth, one of the best things you could do is batch cook some meals in the freezer and the fridge so that when you get home with your newborn, you don’t have to worry about cooking meals from scratch. Having a newborn, you can neglect yourself quite a lot initially, so having nutritious Meals ready to go will make the world of difference. This also goes for going forward, if you have a couple of hours free on the weekend while you have a grandparent over visiting then take that time to prepare some meals for the week ahead so that you can have an easier week and sustain yourself properly. Not eating right and just living off cereal bars or biscuits while trying to look after a baby is not good. You need to be focusing on the baby but also on yourself, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
Breastfeeding And Bottle-Feeding
Many things happen when you have a newborn you don’t realize or are prepared for. Feeding your baby can sometimes become a lot more stressful than it needs to be. Breastfeeding is best; however, having a fed baby is the best. You don’t want a hungry baby. Things happen, and you may not be able to breastfeed due to health issues, just simply not supplying enough milk or getting something like mastitis, which affects your feeding. In these cases, feeding your baby with formula is completely fine, and they will still be healthy and happy. If you breastfeed, however, you do need to be on the lookout for things like mastitis and how to care for your nipples after breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can sometimes make your nipples very sore, and protecting them with things like nipple covers throughout the day so things rub against them will be helpful.
Don’t Neglect Your Relationship
Never a very important thing which can happen without you. Even realizing it is. You focus all your time on the baby and completely neglect your partner. This can make some feel lonely or resentful, and this is when you want to be able to put together and be stronger than ever rather than drift apart. if you can get a family member to babysit, even if it’s in the same house, you just have time to yourselves, it is best to do that. Having kids can make a romantic life difficult, but making sure you spend time together, have date nights, and still focus on each other and your needs will help your relationship stay strong.
