DIY Green Clay Mask | Eco-conscious and sustainable lifestyle blog - GoodGirlGoneGreen.com

I'm about to give you the best green clay mask recipe you've ever enjoyed!

But first, confession time: I am secretly a girly girl. I may rock fun colours in my hair, empower busy women to live greener, and have no trouble standing up for things that are important to me, but I also love to relax with a good self-pampering session.

I love to wear make-up, do fun face masks, and put nail polish on my tiny toes. Sounds like a fun Saturday night, no? I always try to use homemade beauty products, as they are cheaper and this way and I love saving money while saving the planet. Plus, I can avoid all the toxins found in conventional beauty products. Win for the Earth, win for us all, right?

One of my favourite DIY face masks is my green clay mask. It works as a detox clay mask and is very soothing on the face, drawing out impurities and toxins from the skin with the help of the green clay, apple cider vinegar, and maca root. My secret ingredient though, if we're being candid, is that I add Frankincense essential oil to help smooth the appearance of fine lines for a more youthful look.

It can be overwhelming to live green all the time – indulging in our self-care and beauty routine shouldn't be.

Easy DIY Green Clay Mask ingredients benefits:

Green Clay – an organic material comprised of a host of essential minerals, iron oxides, and decomposed plant material such as kelp and seaweed. Green clay acts as a magnet drawing dirt from the pores. It's beneficial in removing impurities, tightening the pores, toning the skin, exfoliating dead skin cells, and reducing inflammation in acne. Please note: if you have dry or sensitive skin, the clay mask should only be applied once a week, as the clay will absorb moisture from the skin along with the impurities. We want to protect your skin, not drain it.

Maca Root – rich in Vitamins B, C, and E, maca root provides plenty of calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, and amino acids. There aren't many scientific studies that have been done on the use of maca topically, though there is a maca product supplier that their studies showed it structurally enhanced the firmness of the skin and boosted its inherent protective abilities. All I know is that it feels great on my skin, appears to be doing what it claims to do, and I love it! And that's what's most important in taking good self-care – that you feel nourished and beautiful!

Apple Cider Vinegar – reduces inflammation, helps to balance the pH of your skin, and helps to detoxify the skin.

Frankincense Essential Oil – this essential oil is known to maintain the appearance of healthy, toned skin. It may also help smooth the appearance of fine lines for a more youthful look. Plus, it creates an uplifting atmosphere when inhaled. Breathe deeply my friends – if nothing else, you'll feel rejuvenated relaxing with this DIY clay mask on your face.

Vitamin E – works to block free radicals from the body, which play a large part in the visible ageing process. If we can fight off free radicals, then we can reduce wrinkles and keep the skin youthful-looking.

So, what are you waiting for? As promised, my homemade clay mask recipe is easy-peasy – here's how to make a DIY green clay mask yourself! Be sure to tag me on Instagram and share your experience. I'd love to see it!

DIY Clay Mask

Servings: 0

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp green clay
  • 1 Tbsp maca root powder
  • 2 - 3 Tbsp apple cider vinegar or filtered water amount depends on the consistency you want
  • 1 -2 drops vitamin E
  • 1 - 2 drops frankincense essential oil

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine the clay and maca root powder. Mix well.
  • Slowly add the apple cider vinegar (or filtered water), one tablespoon at a time, mixing constantly. Do this until the mixture becomes smooth and reaches your desired consistency.
  • Stir in the drops of vitamin E
  • Stir in Frankincense essential oil

Notes

Be sure to stir the mixture with a plastic or wooden spoon, as the green clay pulls toxins from metals.
Also, store your clay in a non-metal container; glass is best.
Bentonite clay would work as well for this recipe, transforming it into a version of the famous Aztec clay mask.
If you don't have apple cider vinegar, just use filtered water.
