0:00 Hi, green junkies. I'm your host, Stephanie Moram.
0:03 Today, I wanted to take the time to share with you who I am and how I became a green junkie, just like you.
0:11 You see, I recycled, I brought my bags to the grocery store and randomly bought organic food mostly when it was on sale, to be honest. But that was about as far as I went on my green journey. But all that changed one evening, when I sat down with my husband, to watch the documentary Food Inc. Side note if you haven't seen this movie, I highly suggest that you take the time to watch it, it will change your views on our food system.
0:44 So back to the story. I'm not joking when I said I literally cried the whole time through this movie, I couldn't believe that meat and animals were being raised in this way, I was totally shocked to hear about all the potential health risks associated with eating meat was being farmed. That was the moment when I turned to my husband and said, “We need to start eating organic everything from here or here on out.” Little did I know that his response would literally change everything. He looked at me and said, “You want to buy organic. Tell me why?” When I'm challenged, to do some research and look stuff up, you don't have to ask me twice. But at that very moment, I didn't truly understand why. I just knew that organic was better based on the movie. But that was definitely not enough for him.
1:44 I knew I'd been called out but at the same time, I recognize that I was also being called up to learn more. So I went into full-on research mode. I spent hours upon hours online researching the case for eating organic food. I started by asking questions, when we went to the grocery store, and when we'd go to the farmers market. And I'd spent ages learning about where the produce came from, whether there were nitrates used on the farm.
2:16 I asked them questions about their animals and how they were treated. And I would ask the differences between organic and grass-fed meat. At this point I hadn't 100% taken the plant-based approach, I was still eating meat. And I wanted to make sure that when I was that we were eating the best meat possible. At the time, I felt like I was a three-year-old. Everything was why, why? Why? I was constantly asking why. Sure enough, pretty soon, we were eating mostly organic. And soon after that, after all my research, I decided to eat more plant-based and essentially go vegan. My husband joined me in eating a more plant-based diet, but he was still eating animal products at that time.
3:08 You see, my green living journey might have started with food and Food Inc. But it didn't end there. Because I was literally questioning everything from health and beauty products to household goods, clothing, footwear, furniture, and baby supplies for our new edition. Because you see, I was pregnant.
3:32 I was obsessed and officially became a green junkie at this time. As I mentioned, I was pregnant with my daughter, and I was looking for the best products to keep her safe. I remember that I really wanted to buy a certain changing pad. It was PVC-free. It was from a great company. But $100 for a changing pad just wasn't in our budget at that time. My husband looked at me like I had three eyes. But I was determined to get that changing pad. So I made some different choices. Instead of getting a changing table made out of non-toxic paint and FSC wood or reclaimed wood. We decided to forego it and just get the changing pad. We actually saved money by buying something that was more expensive.
4:25 So you see, it doesn't have to cost a lot of money to live a little more green. You can make different choices that will lead you to perhaps saving a little bit more money. And before long after my daughter was born, I found myself doing something I never in a million years thought I would be doing.
4:48 We watched another documentary. It was called who killed the electric car. I was mad. I was upset. I couldn't believe the extent that the gas industry went In an attempt to kill the concept of an electric car, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much control that large corporations can have when it comes to certain things. The level of greenwashing is so real.
5:18 But this time instead of asking all the questions, I felt called to do something. I didn't know what at the time, I thought about starting a campaign to make my town plastic bag free. I thought about lobbying for curbside compost collection. Then one day while explaining how difficult it has been to find an ethical and sustainable product, my friend said, you know, most people don't know half of what you know. If they did, they'd be shocked. You should start a blog. A couple of weeks later, Good Girl Gone green was born.
5:59 Since 2011, I've been sharing everything I know about green living with the Good Girl Gone green community, and I am so honoured to now be sharing it with you, my fellow green junkies.
