Project Green Foot- Week 44

6 Comments Project Green Foot Pin It

It is raspberries season, and I am so excited! I found another local farmer about 20 minutes from my place that sells freshly picked raspberries among other fruits and veggies. I was at my local natural food store when I saw the raspberries- there were California ones and local ones. No brainer on which ones to purchase.

The name of the farm was on the label so I took out my trusty iPhone and googled the farm. Found them and put the package of raspberries back on the shelf that was $3.69 for a small container. That afternoon, I was at the farm picking up some raspberries. Since I bought 2 boxes containing 12 containers in each box, they sold the small containers for $2.50 each. Crazy! That is a savings of $1.19 per container because I went right to the source. I tapped myself on the back.

Did I mention the  farm is certified organic? All I can say is that they are the best tasting raspberries I have ever had.

We are almost through the first box, but in my defense I did make lots of raspberries smoothies, and a raw sweet treat. And, little E has been eating them like crazy. I blame her.

Just to be clear, I will be returning the empty box and all the plastic containers for the farmers to reuse!

What is your favorite fruit or vegetable during the summer season?

2-COMPOSTING
We drank a lot of juice and smoothies this week. I am pretty sure we have double the amount of compost this week. I believe this is our composting record.

I would say at least 25 lbs.

3-RECYCLING
We didn’t have much recycling. I did have a few glass jars that I won’t be able to reuse that I decided to put in the recycling.

4-TRASH
We had the usual suspects like receipts, and some random pieces of plastic that can’t be recycled.    Not much trash to report. It was a really good week. When I went to La Crudessence to pick up our food, I brought our LunchBots, so I didn’t have to take any plastic containers! They are always so accommodating to my not so easy ways.

5-TRAVEL
This week, J.P drove from his parents place on Monday as well as from work and back all week. I drove from his parents place as well on Monday, daycare, Lufa Farms, Verger Terrasolen (farm), and some local driving.

The total distance traveled on the TDI was 346.5 km (215 mi) and for the Mazda it was 248.5 km (142 mi). We didn’t have to fill up either gas tank his week.

    Loving all your goodies ;)
The raspberries the most – looking forward to buying them from a local farm – we usually have an abundance of them on our bushes, but this year with all that heat, they turn red when they’re premature ~ not the juicy large berries we’re used to. Oh well….

I’m inspired by your budget list – it seems I never know where the money goes – but I do like to compare costs and find good deals ;)
Wishing you a lovely week. xoxo

Our local apple farm also has a pick-your-own blueberry patch; they come home still with that pale haze over them – we can easily go through five pounds in a few days!
Usually for the fourth of July I have some cherry and/or blueberry offering (sometimes supplemented with whipped cream for that red/white/blue effect); but this year it’s just cherries, as a topping of a cherry frangipane tart. The original recipe is for a pear-frangipane tart, but the cherries and the almonds go really well together. If you add a sprinkle of Cointreau on the frangipane you really don’t need any whipped or ice cream.
I wish you a rich and local abundance!

Those raspberries look amazing! Our second round of berries are just coming into season and I can’t wait to get my hands on some to make pie.
