It seems silly to think that a small piece of plastic can make a difference. I recently read that one Virginia manufacture makes four billion plastic straws a year. And that is just one manufacture.
Now think about all the plastic that is used to produce those straws. Think about all the waste the straws create. What if I told you there was a safe and environmental sound alternative? The solution to all this plastic waste- glass straws by GlassDharma.
Whenever we dine out at a restaurant, we are inevitably given a plastic straw by default. If you are not providing your own straw when ordering a green juice or strawberry smoothie, you will get a plastic straw.
Over the last 6 months, I can’t even count the amount of times I have used the phrase “no straw, please” even when I am just ordering simple water. Thankfully, if I have forgotten, most straws come wrapped in paper so no waste is created. However, this not only creates plastic waste when they are used, but paper waste. Seems like a vicious cycle.
Most of the time the plastic straws end up in a landfill and others make their way to our rivers and lakes and eventually end up in our oceans where marine life munch on them thinking they are food. Wouldn’t you like to be part of the solution? Would you like to reduce the amount of virgin plastic that you use?
In honor of Earth Day, GlassDharma is giving away 1000 of their glass straws! That means a 1000 less people need to use plastic straws!
All you have to do is:
- Write a 100 to 200 word essay in an attached document or create a 1 to 3 minute YouTube Video of why you love glass straws.
- Email your essay or video to EarthDay@GlassDharma.com and request a free glass straw.
- The first 1000 essays or video contest entries received by the Earth Day deadline will receive a free Glass Straw from GlassDharma.
- Don’t forget to include your name, email address and mailing address.
A judging panel consisting of three passionate Environmental Bloggers and three members of the GlassDharma staff are ready to select 10 finalists, five for the video category, and five for the essay category. One Grand Prize Winner for each category will be selected by popular vote amongst the judges. Grand Prize Winners will receive a $100.00 electronic GlassDharma Gift Code by email.
So what are you waiting for? Get your thinking cap on and start writing or taping. Be creative and let us all know why you love glass straws.
Maybe the next time you are at a restaurant you will be able to say these 3 words- no straw, please. Make a statement by whipping out your glass straw, and possibly you will recruit a new no-straw convert and feel as though that one phrase has made a difference to some teeny tiny creature in the ocean.
No.straw.please.

I am the Good Girl Gone Green. Seeing garbage cans overflowing with recyclables breaks my heart.

I have tried stainless straws but never the glass. You are like a freak for them so maybe i will have to finally try them.
Thinking cap on.
Put your thinking cap on! First 1000 people get a free straw, so worth!
What a great offer…thanks for the heads-up!
My pleasure!
And yet another thing I have never thought of. And I must admit, we use straws regularly. When I saw the title of your post, I thought; “Oh, shoot! No more straws!”. I am glad to see that their is an alternative.
Not sure if I will enter the contest, but I will certainly treat myself and my family members to a glass straw.
So glad to have found your site, and I love the name
Thank you! Let me know if you like their straws. I am so sure you will though!
Very cool! Pinning this.
Thanks for linking up at the Green & Natural Mama Linky!
Thanks, Charise!
Awesome- i like the ones with the colorful little glass bubbles. i’ve used paper straws in the past, but they don’t seem to be readily available. what gives?
They are pretty with the little bubbles! I believe you have to buy them on the internet. they are available in some stores. Checkout their website.
I mainly just don’t use straws but drink directly from the glass. For people who really like straws, though, this is a better alternative.
Much better alternative for sure! I like drinking from a straw and my 17 month old is not really at the drinking from a cup age yet. I have teeny tiny one for her when she drinks fresh juice and water! I love them.
I will be trying these, my kids use disposable straws because I’m a fanatic about germs. I love the idea of glass so you can see if it’s really clean. Are these pretty strong glass?
I think they are strong. I let me 17 months old use one under supervision of course. I wouldn’t let her play with it alone! I personally, really love my glass straws!
These are the Tuxedo’s of any straws ever made as far as i am concerned, classy, unique and environmentally friendly, if we all do just a small part in the preservation to our environment, just look what our next generations to come can look forward too, Glass Dharma has got it going on in my book, keep up the fantastic work, it’s people like this that are our future, people, MY HATS OFF TO ALL OF YOU, By the way, i am a dedicated Alumnae Girl Scout, so the environment has always been and will always be a big part of my life here on this beautiful planet.
Thank you so much!
Hello, I am JoseMargo Flores from the Philippines.
I’m starting a movement in the my country, and I call it the “No Straw, Please”. It’s actually on the birth stage but I’m planning to utilize all social media platforms to make a lot of people aware of the problem concerning the excessive usage of straw.
I made a video about it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0FC8ZJdkh8 I hope you can share it, or support the movement as well even if you’re not from my country. I believe we have the same purpose of helping our planet.
Thank you!
If you DO use straws however (or know someone who does) tell them to save them all — for friends who have cats and kittens! Heck I’d love it if my friends did this for me — I think I’m going to send everyone this post and have them send their used straws to me.
Cats and especially teething kittens LOVE straws – they are safe to chew on and fun to play with. We don’t buy or use straws except for occasional drinks at Coffee Bean, so I save them, clean them and give them to the cats. I work with rescue kittens so I can always use extra straws.
Thanks for the great post!
